Hans William Henry Irvine was a man of entrepreneurial spirit and vision, who invested in land, mining and vineyards acquiring the vineyard that is now known as “Seppelt Great Western”. To extend the underground cellars at this already established winery he turned to France for help; importing a French winemaker “Charles Pierlot” from Pommery champagne house as well as all necessary bottles and machinery. His ambition proved successful when his sparkling wine made with traditional champagne methods became Australia’s first quality-based bubbly – winning gold medal recognition at the 1900 Paris exhibition!
