The Seppelt Mount Ida Heathcote Shiraz 2023 is a limited-release wine that highlights the power and elegance of Heathcote Shiraz. It comes from the Mount Ida vineyard, established in 1975, where ancient Cambrian soils and volcanic slopes create grapes of depth and intensity.
On the nose, this Shiraz shows dark chocolate, ripe plum and nougat oak. Earthy spice and the iron-rich character typical of Heathcote also shine through. The palate is rich and layered with blackberry, blood plum and dark cocoa. Firm, gravelly tannins carry the wine to a long and savoury finish.
The 2023 season was cooler and wetter than usual. As a result, the vineyard faced more rainfall and disease pressure. However, careful canopy management and selective fruit thinning helped deliver fruit of excellent quality. This attention to detail ensured the wine retained both structure and freshness.
Food pairing is straightforward and versatile. Enjoy it with grilled beef, roast lamb or duck in a rich sauce. It also works beautifully with cured meats, hearty pasta dishes and BBQ fare. In addition, the wine complements spicy cuisine, making it a great choice for both fine dining and casual meals.
This release is approachable now but will reward cellaring until 2035 and beyond. In fact, the wine’s balance of fruit, spice and tannin structure makes it a perfect candidate for long-term ageing.
The Seppelt Mount Ida Heathcote Shiraz 2023 is not only an expression of its vineyard but also a continuation of Seppelt’s heritage. For more than 170 years, Seppelt has crafted wines that honour both place and tradition. Therefore, this release stands as a modern example of why Heathcote Shiraz is considered one of Australia’s most distinctive red wine styles.
