Located at the heart of the wine and food village of the Grampians, Seppelt Great Western was established in 1865 and has a long and rich history of producing stunning award-winning wines. Today you are able to visit the Seppelt property and experience for yourself the alluring aromas and delicious flavours of our Great Western wines and various varietals from other vineyards across the state. With the opportunity to select parcels of fruit from our stunning vineyards, our talented winemakers are able to create variations of selected varietals from different terroir and environments to invoke different flavours and textures making them perfect to compare. There is no better comparison than two of Seppelt Wines most marvellous and award-winning Rieslings.
One of our delicious local classics is the Great Western Riesling; a delicate, perfumed aromatic white wine, with a mouth-watering acid structure and an off-dry finish! As you crack this bottle, experience the alluring aromas of mulberry and blue fruits with exotic spices and lifted floral notes filling your nose. As you pour the pale straw stream into a glass, notice its clarity before lifting the glass to your lips to taste the citrus fruit and red apple with a hint of spiced ginger, combined with a chalky acid - a wine with balance and delicacy. The stunning flavours evident in this gorgeous Riesling are the result of wet winters and usually above average rainfall as well as cool summer temperatures with little rain, resulting in a long growing season and exceptional quality. The Grampians Region soils consist of free draining, grey sands and rich loam over red brown clay. The region's viticultural tradition dates back to the 1850s gold rush, and ranks among the oldest continuously producing wine districts in Australia.
In comparison, is our widely renowned Drumborg Riesling, one of Seppelt Wines most sought after whites. This Riesling is widely recognised for its fruit purity, structure, intensity of flavour and of course, cellaring potential! When you open a bottle you are mesmerised by aromas of freshly zested Tahitian lime and white flowers, combined with a spicy ginger. The Drumborg Riesling, similar to its Great Western counterpart, also has a pale straw colour with green hues and as you pour it into the glass you notice a divine clarity. The palate shows an innate purity with concentrated lime fruit and lemon sorbet supported with fine-boned mineral acid and textural elements, producing a powerful wine with balance and length. These flavours are a result of cool winters with good early rainfalls and average to warm summer temperatures, with persistent fine conditions and little rain. This resulted in above-average yields and exceptional qualities. Seppelt Wines pioneered cool climate viticulture in Australia with the establishment of the Drumborg Vineyard at Henty in 1964, the region's first commercial vineyard. Our original planting of the Seppelt Drumborg Riesling still survives, and is revered for its great finesse and longevity.
