Seppelt Wines have a long and amazing history of producing delicious and renowned red, white and sparkling varietals of award-winning wine. Established in the Barossa Valley in 1851, the Seppelts' popularity and success quickly grew, becoming the largest wine company in Australia, and in 1918, the family decided to purchase the already famous Great Western winery from then owner and businessman Hans Irvine in regional Western Victoria. First founded in 1865 by the Best brothers, the winery in Great Western has its own incredible history full of innovation and passionate viticulturists. Under Irvine's reign, French winemaker Charles Pierlot was employed at the Great Western property to produce an Australian adaptation of ‘Champagne’ which had previously not been produced outside of France, and was later credited for making the first ever Sparkling Shiraz. Through a period of decades, spanning from the mid 1860s to the early 1930s, excavations took place on the Great Western property which in its completion resulted in 3 kilometres of underground cellars. With a capacity of 3 million bottles, these cellars are the largest of their kind in Australia and were made solely for the purpose of wine maturation in perfect cellaring conditions. Over the recent months, our Cellar Door staff have been able to explore every inch of the 3kms of ‘Drives’ beneath the property, uncovering the treasures that are hidden within.
After discovering a selection of vintages from years gone by, we have decided to create 10 collections of back vintage wines to reflect and celebrate the rich history of Seppelt Great Western.
